Here's a fun way to work on morphological awareness in speech therapy
As you probably already know, I'm a huge fan of teaching morphological awareness in my speech therapy sessions with older elementary students.
As I've gotten deeper into teaching my students this undertaught-yet-very-important area, I've run into difficulties explaining to my students why and how words undergo spelling changes when affixes are added. There are regular spelling rules that apply at times. And as you might already know from my post about the difference between transparent and opaque words, opaque words can undergo a change in spelling when affixes are added to root/base words.
I found a great, free resource that explains many of the spelling rules students need to know when they're combining roots/base words with affixes. It was created by the Rhode Island Department of Education and it's entitled, How Morphology Informs Spelling. It outlines some of the spelling rules for assimilated and non-assimilated prefixes, bases (free and bound), and inflectional and derivational suffixes. It also explains the E-rule, the Y-rule, and two doubling rules.
In addition, Words Their Way has a resource that helps with word study and inferring spelling rules for affixes including -ing, -ed, and plural -s/-es. You can get it for free here.
Try exploring some of these spelling rules with this additional free morphological awareness game I made. Just click on the image and it will take you the free downloads page. This particular game is called Morphology Game 2. Click on it to start the game.
Can't get enough morphological awareness info?
Here's a post with a morphological awareness goal and a bunch of free activities.
